International Historical Congress:
The First Republic and Republicanism
São Bento Palace, Lisbon
29 September to 2 October 2010
The International Historical Congress, The First Republic
and Republicanism, is an initiative by the research centres of Portuguese
universities included in the Assembly of the Republic's commemorations
of the Centenary of the Republic.
A century after the 5th of October, the First Republic is still
remembered today for the political revolution that gave birth to
it and for the reversals suffered by the unstable regime that followed.
Before becoming a regime, however, Republicanism was also a modernising
cultural movement.
This congress will reflect on all this and inevitably touch on the
impact of the Military Dictatorship and the New State on the republican
movement, and recall its resistance to institutions and dogmas.
